VISION AND MISSION:
Our objective is to provide children with an all round education to give them a better understanding of the school curriculum, to enhance their awareness, logical thinking, power of expression and in general to develop their abilities to their fullest extent. It is our mission to create a functional education programme and to direct their individual talents and dispositions towards suitable earning opportunities. We give particular attention to older children and girls since there is a greater chance of them dropping out of school.

BACKGROUND:
A group of like-minded housewives started Anandan in April 1999 with the objective of providing basic education in a creative learning environment to economically disadvantaged slum children. We were all from a middle class background, educated and at a stage of life when we felt we should do something for the society. The value of education and the benefits of whole hearted personal involvement in the education and welfare of such children as a social responsibility were realized. The desire to extend this involvement to the hundreds of young and promising lives that are wasted became our goal.

HISTORY:
The first Anandan centre was in the house of one of the volunteers. Seed money for the project was a monthly Rs 200 made by each founding member. The bulk of the teaching and co-curricular activities were carried out by the volunteers. One teacher was subsequently engaged.

GROWTH:
A social worker was engaged to do a survey of the slums in the area and 10 children were enrolled. By word of mouth student strength increased rapidly and Anandan became a thriving centre. Kolkata Municipal Corporation gave us 2 rooms on rent as we were short of space. We decided to start vocational classes for girls who were school drop outs. The idea was to make them self reliant. Sewing and Beautician classes for young girls were introduced.

FORMALIZATION:
1. Anandan was registered as a Society in 2001
2. IT Exemptions registration u/s. 12A of I.T.Act,1961 in 2001.
3. Registration under Foreign Contribution ( Regulation )Act,1976 in 2003.
4. Application to Calcutta Municipal Corporation was made for school premises and 2 rooms were taken on rent in a corporation School in 2002.
